The Orange Baboon Tarantula “Dark Color Form” (DCF) is the moody, high-contrast variant of the most famous Old World species in history. Pterinochilus murinus (DCF) replaces the typical neon orange with a stunning palette of deep charcoal, olive-drab, and metallic bronze, making it a sophisticated choice for keepers who prefer a more natural, cryptic “stealth” aesthetic.
Quick Facts
- Species: Pterinochilus murinus (DCF)
- Size: 4.5-5.5 inch leg span when mature
- Lifespan: Females 12-15 years | Males 3-4 years
- Growth Rate: Very Fast
- Temperament: Defensive, lightning-fast, and highly territorial
- Care Level: Advanced ⭐⭐⭐
If you want a spider that is virtually “indestructible” and incredibly active, the DCF OBT is unmatched. This species is a relentless architect, capable of filling an entire enclosure with thick, architectural silk tunnels in a matter of days. They are famous for their explosive feeding response and “teleportation” speed, making every interaction a testament to the raw intensity of African Old World species.
Silk Road Note: This species is the definition of “Advanced.” They possess medically significant venom and are known for their “strike first” defensive posture. They do not have urticating hairs, so they rely entirely on their speed and bite. We recommend this species strictly for experienced keepers who are comfortable with fast, defensive spiders and want a hardy, drought-tolerant display animal.
🏡 Care Requirements
Provide 3-4 inches of bone-dry substrate with plenty of cork bark and fake plants to serve as anchor points for their heavy webbing. Keep temperatures between 75-84°F with low humidity (40-50%). Always provide a shallow water dish. Feed 1-2 appropriately sized insects weekly. Their care is incredibly simple, provided you respect their speed and space.
