Zombie Crab (Gecarcinus ruricola) – juvenile to adult

The Zombie Crab is a vivid, terrestrial wanderer and one of the most enigmatic land-dwelling crustaceans of the Caribbean. Gecarcinus ruricola earns its haunting name not from its behavior, but from its startling appearance—featuring a dark, often purplish-black carapace contrasted by glowing yellow or pale spots that look like ghostly eyes peering from the forest floor.

Unlike their aquatic cousins, Zombie Crabs are true land-dwellers that only return to the sea to release their larvae. They are famous for their massive annual migrations, moving in vast numbers like a living tide across the landscape. In a terrarium, they are industrious engineers, constantly rearranging their environment and displaying a complex range of scavenging behaviors that make them a fascinating alternative to traditional “sit and wait” predators.
