The Ultimate Scorpion Starter Guide: Your First Stingless (Almost!) Companion

Scorpions are the armored tanks of the invertebrate world. With an evolutionary design that hasn’t changed much in 400 million years, they are the ultimate low-maintenance, high-impact display pets. At Silk Road Exotics, we believe scorpions are the perfect entry point for keepers who want something prehistoric, hardy, and visually commanding.

Contrary to popular myths, most scorpions in the pet trade are not “deadly” monsters. In fact, many are quite shy and spend their time expertly managing their micro-habitats. Here is the definitive Silk Road guide to starting your journey into the world of scorpions.

1. Choosing Your First Scorpion: The “Big Three”

For a beginner, you want a species that is hardy, has mild venom, and is “forgiving” of husbandry mistakes. We recommend starting with one of these hobby staples:

SpeciesCommon NameTemperamentCare Style
Pandinus imperatorEmperor ScorpionDocile & HeavyTropical / High Humidity
Heterometrus sp.Asian Forest ScorpionBold & ActiveTropical / High Humidity
Hadrurus arizonensisDesert Hairy ScorpionFeisty & VisibleArid / Bone Dry

2. Tropical vs. Arid: The Great Divide

The most important rule in scorpion keeping: Match the habitat to the origin. You cannot keep a desert scorpion in a tropical tank, and vice versa.

The Tropical Setup (Emperors / Asian Forest)

These species hail from rainforest floors and need moisture to survive.

  • Substrate: 4–6 inches of moisture-retaining soil (Coco fiber/Peat moss blend). These species are heavy excavators and love to dig shallow burrows.
  • Humidity: 70–80%. Keep the substrate damp (not swampy) and provide a large, shallow water dish.
  • Temperature: 75–82°F. Room temperature is usually fine, but they appreciate a slightly warmer corner of the room.

The Arid Setup (Desert Hairy)

These are the “tanks” of the American Southwest and thrive in dry, hot conditions.

  • Substrate: 5–7 inches of a sand/excavator clay mix. They are prolific tunnelers and need substrate that won’t collapse.
  • Humidity: Low (30–40%). Keep the enclosure bone-dry. Only provide a small water dish and never mist the tank.
  • Temperature: 80–85°F. These scorpions love heat. A small heat mat on the side of the tank (never the bottom) mimics the desert sun.

3. Feeding and Nutrition

Scorpions are nocturnal hunters. They don’t need to eat every day—overfeeding is a common beginner mistake that leads to lethargy.

  • Prey: Crickets, Dubia roaches, and mealworms are the gold standard.
  • Schedule: 1–2 appropriately sized insects once or twice a week is plenty for an adult.
  • The “Pincers vs. Tail” Rule: Usually, scorpions with large, beefy pincers (like Asian Forest Scorpions) rely on strength to crush prey. Scorpions with thin, delicate pincers rely more on their sting. Stick to the “Big Pincer” species for your first pet!

4. Understanding Scorpion Behavior

Fluorescence: One of the coolest parts of owning a scorpion? They glow a vibrant neon blue-green under UV (Blacklight). This is a must-have tool for any keeper to observe their pet at night.

The Molt: Like spiders, scorpions shed their skin to grow. They will become lethargic and refuse food. Do not disturb a molting scorpion, as their new armor is soft and easily damaged.

Handling: While some species are docile, scorpions are “display only” pets. Even a mild sting can cause pain similar to a hornet, and their pincers can deliver a nasty pinch. Always use 12-inch tongs for all maintenance.

5. Common Myths vs. Reality

Myth: “Small scorpions are always more deadly.”
Reality: While often true in the wild (especially with “Bark Scorpions”), it’s not a rule. Always research the specific scientific name (Genus/Species) before buying.

Myth: “They will sting themselves to death if cornered.”
Reality: This is a total myth. Scorpions are immune to their own venom and are highly resilient survivors.
