If you are looking for a “Master Architect,” the Rear Horned Baboon is unmatched. This species is a relentless webber, quickly transforming its enclosure into a complex system of silken tunnels and “dirt-curtains” that integrate substrate into the webbing. They are famous for their explosive feeding response—often striking prey with incredible speed before retreating back into their silken fortress. Their fast growth rate and bizarre “unicorn” horn make them a favorite for serious collectors.
Silk Road Note: As an Old World species from Africa, the Rear Horned Baboon possesses medically significant venom and lightning-fast speed. They do not have urticating hairs and will not hesitate to defend their burrow with intensity if disturbed. We recommend this species strictly for experienced keepers who are comfortable managing fast, defensive, and opportunistic burrowers.
🏡 Care Requirements
Provide 4-5 inches of dry substrate with several pieces of cork bark to serve as “anchor points” for their heavy webbing. Keep temperatures between 75-84°F with low to moderate humidity (40-50%). They are very hardy and drought-tolerant, but a small water dish should always be provided. Feed 1-2 appropriately sized insects weekly. Their low-maintenance needs and incredible silken structures make them a thrill to keep.
