If you are looking for a “bridge” species between New World and Old World tarantulas, the Suntiger is the ultimate choice. This species is a relentless architect, constructing elaborate silken “dirt curtains” and vertical tunnels among the trees. They are famous for their “teleportation” speed and an explosive feeding response that makes every interaction a thrill. Unlike most New Worlds, they do not have urticating hairs, so they rely entirely on their speed and defensiveness for protection.
Silk Road Note: While they lack medically significant venom, P. irminia possesses a bite that is considered more potent than your average New World spider. They are incredibly fast and won’t hesitate to throw up a threat posture if their territory is invaded. We recommend this species for keepers who have mastered the basics and are ready for a high-speed, arboreal display animal that commands respect.
🏡 Care Requirements
Provide a vertical enclosure with plenty of height and cork bark slabs for climbing. Use a moisture-retaining substrate and keep temperatures between 75-82°F with moderate to high humidity (70-80%). Ensure excellent cross-ventilation to prevent mold. Feed 1-2 appropriately sized insects weekly. They are bold hunters that will quickly become the star of your arboreal collection.
