If you are looking for a “Ghost of the Terrarium,” the Vendula Earth Tiger is unmatched. This species is an expert architect, constructing deep, silk-lined burrows that often extend upward into elaborate webbed retreats. They are famous for their explosive feeding response—often striking prey at the mouth of their burrow with incredible speed before vanishing back into the shadows. Their fast growth rate and bold patterns make every rare sighting a major event.
Silk Road Note: As an Old World species from the Ornithoctoninae subfamily, the Vendula possesses medically significant venom and “teleportation” speed. They do not have urticating hairs and will defend their territory with intensity if disturbed. We recommend this species strictly for experienced keepers who are comfortable managing fast, defensive, moisture-dependent spiders.
🏡 Care Requirements
Provide 5-6 inches of moist, tropical substrate to allow for natural burrowing. Keep temperatures between 75-82°F with high humidity (70-80%). Ensure the enclosure has excellent cross-ventilation to prevent stagnant air. Feed 1-2 appropriately sized insects weekly. They thrive in a “wet-dry” cycle where the lower layers of substrate stay moist while the surface is allowed to dry slightly between mistings.
