Description

The Ecuadorian Purple Bloom is a heavy-duty titan of the Andes and one of the most visually stunning giants in the hobby. Pamphobeteus sp. Machala is world-famous for its incredible growth rate and the breathtaking metallic purple “starburst” that radiates from the carapace, accented by deep velvet-black legs and fire-red abdominal hairs.

Quick Facts

  • Species: Pamphobeteus sp. Machala
  • Size: 7-8 inch leg span (Large/Giant Species)
  • Lifespan: Females 15-20 years | Males 3-4 years
  • Growth Rate: Extremely Fast
  • Temperament: Confident, high-energy, and food-motivated
  • Care Level: Intermediate ⭐⭐

If you are looking for a “Showpiece” spider that grows like a weed, the Machala is unmatched. This species is famous for having one of the most intense feeding responses in the world—they rarely miss a meal and will often tackle prey nearly their own size. While females retain a heavy, dark mahogany-to-purple hue, the mature males are legendary for their neon-purple brilliance. Their sheer bulk and active personality make them a centerpiece of any South American collection.

Silk Road Note: These are “New World” spiders, meaning they lack medically significant venom, but they are far more “skittish” and defensive than your average beginner species. They are prolific flickers of urticating hairs when disturbed. We recommend this species for keepers who want a giant-scale spider with a lot of “attitude” and a stunning color palette.

🏡 Care Requirements

Provide 4-5 inches of moist, tropical substrate to allow for burrowing as spiderlings and moisture retention as adults. Keep temperatures between 75-82°F with moderate to high humidity (70-80%). They are incredibly hardy but prefer a damp corner in the enclosure. Feed 1-2 large insects weekly. Their explosive growth and massive size require a spacious enclosure to accommodate their leggy reach.
