Description

The Fort Hall Baboon is a master of camouflage and one of the most underrated architectural webbers from the African continent. Pterinochilus lugardi is prized for its elegant, cryptic patterning of sandy tans, soft greys, and intricate “starburst” markings on the carapace—a stunning example of nature’s tactical design.

Quick Facts

  • Species: Pterinochilus lugardi
  • Size: 4-5 inch leg span when mature
  • Lifespan: Females 12-15 years | Males 3-4 years
  • Growth Rate: Fast
  • Temperament: Skittish, fast, and defensive (Old World)
  • Care Level: Advanced ⭐⭐⭐

If you enjoy watching a tarantula completely transform its environment, the Fort Hall Baboon is a top-tier choice. This species is a prolific webber that will quickly turn its enclosure into a complex network of silken tunnels and “trapdoor” style retreats. While they are Old World spiders, many keepers find P. lugardi to be slightly more reclusive and less “confrontational” than its cousin, the OBT, preferring to retreat into its silk fortress rather than stand its ground.

Silk Road Note: As an Old World species, the Fort Hall Baboon possesses medically significant venom and lightning-fast speed. They do not have urticating hairs, so they rely on their speed and bite for defense. We recommend this species for experienced keepers who are comfortable managing fast, defensive spiders and want a hardy, drought-tolerant display animal.

🏡 Care Requirements

Provide 4-5 inches of dry substrate with cork bark and fake plants to act as “anchor points” for their heavy webbing. Keep temperatures between 75-82°F with low humidity (around 40-50%). Always provide a shallow water dish. Feed 1-2 appropriately sized insects weekly. They are bold, aggressive eaters that rarely miss a meal!
