Description

The Guatemalan Tiger Rump is one of the most visually stunning and active New World species in the hobby. Davus pentaloris is famous for its brilliant copper-orange carapace and a striking “tiger-stripe” pattern of deep black and vivid orange across the abdomen—making it a high-contrast showpiece even at a small size.

Quick Facts

  • Species: Davus pentaloris
  • Size: 4-4.5 inch leg span (Medium Species)
  • Lifespan: Females 10-12 years | Males 3-4 years
  • Growth Rate: Fast
  • Temperament: Skittish and Fast (Heavy Webber)
  • Care Level: Intermediate ⭐⭐

If you enjoy watching a tarantula interact with its environment, the Tiger Rump is for you. This species is a prolific architect, quickly filling its enclosure with thick, white silk tunnels and elaborate web-mats. Unlike slow-growing Chilean species, Davus pentaloris has a fast growth rate and an explosive feeding response, making them incredibly rewarding to raise from a sling to a colorful adult.

Silk Road Note: While they are “New World” and possess mild venom, they are quite fast and can be skittish when disturbed. We recommend this species for keepers who have mastered the basics and are looking for a more active, display-oriented spider that spends its time “redecorating” with silk.

🏡 Care Requirements

Provide 3-4 inches of substrate with plenty of “anchor points” like cork bark or fake plants for webbing. Keep temperatures between 72-80°F with moderate humidity (60-70%). Unlike desert species, they appreciate slightly damp substrate in one corner. Feed 1-2 appropriately sized insects weekly. They are bold eaters and rarely miss a meal!
